The Why?
Ako Script is a typographic design led proposal aiming to break down pathways to crime and promote the continued engagement of dyslexic students in the New Zealand literacy curriculum.
The design features
The dimensions are designed to match existing handwriting resources and standards as outlined by the New Zealand Ministry of Education.
All letters begin and end at the same point above the baseline. This creates a repetitive process and fully linked word construction.
The letter spacing is determined by the writing process. This creates consistent and legible word construction.
All letters follow a natural tilt. This requires fewer fine motor skills to form each letter and its link.
Each character stroke pattern is different. This makes it more challenging to mentally reflect letters while reading. (As demonstrated by the Helvetica b,d,p,q example on the right).
